head When the world’s most famous feline hits the three-decade milestone, it’s time to celebrate! GARFIELD: 30 YEARS OF LAUGHS & LASAGNA (Ballantine Books hardcover; October 28, 2008) is a tribute to this tremendous achievement. With a look and feel unlike any Garfield book that’s come before it, GARFIELD: 30 YEARS OF LAUGHS & LASAGNA goes back to where it all began—the Garfield comic strip.

Organized by decade, each with an introduction by Jim Davis, this lavishly illustrated volume features more than four hundred strips, including thirty of Jim Davis’s all-time favorites—with informative remarks from Jim about why they made the grade. Packed with early sketches, enlightening quotes, and fun facts (did you know that the Garfield comic was originally titled Jon?), this book shows how Garfield evolved from a witty kitty to a world-renowned fat cat.

subheadOf Jim Davis’s “little hobby,” Blondie cartoonist Dean Young writes: “Every one of [these] little treasures is an exquisite menagerie of comic timing, writing, and cartoon art. It’s easy to see why his strip is continually voted one of the best on our planet by readers everywhere.”

Even at 30 years old, the favorite feline is still holding strong. Garfield currently holds the Guinness World Record as the most widely syndicated comic strip, with 230 million daily readers and products in 111 countries. Garfield books have sold 135 million copies, and have been translated into 27 languages. Thirty-three titles have made The New York Times bestseller lists. “Garfield Minus Garfield,” a webcomic that cuts Garfield from the traditional comic strip to leave a solitary Jon, has become an overnight Internet sensation and has been featured in publications such as The New York Times and Rolling Stone. Ballantine Books will simultaneously publish a collection of strips from the webcomic Garfield Minus Garfield on October 28.

illuGARFIELD : 30 YEARS OF LAUGHS & LASAGNA is a beautiful book that can sit on any coffee table and at the same time capture the silliness and humor that are the heart and soul of the Garfield strips. So if you appreciate the unparalleled splendors of layered pasta, need something to ward off those nap attacks, or have a healthy appetite for humor, GARFIELD: 30 YEARS OF LAUGHS & LASAGNA is just the ticket. Perhaps Jim Davis puts it best: “This whole line of work is to make people happy and smile.” Garfield’s millions of fans couldn’t agree more.

About the Author

cover Jim Davis was born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana, and was promptly dropped on his head—which could explain his lifelong desire to be a cartoonist. He later attended Ball State University in Muncie, where he distinguished himself by earning one of the lowest cumulative grade-point averages in the history of the university. (Incidentally, a fellow classmate named David Letterman earned the other.) The Garfield strip was born on June 19, 1978, syndicated in 41 U.S. newspapers.
