October 3, 2008 Contact: April Flores GarfieldMinusGarfield The Internet sensation—now in book form! “What do you get when you take the cat out of his own comic strip? A lonely and touchingly funny Jon Arbuckle in his own version of What About Bob?” --Entertainment Weekly’s THE MUST LIST
Come savor the existential adventures of Jon Arbuckle in GARFIELD MINUS GARFIELD (Ballantine Books trade paperback, October 28, 2008). Based on the phenomenon ignited by Dan Walsh’s hilarious and wildly popular webcomic (beloved by The New York Times and The Washington Post, and hailed as “inspired” by Garfield creator Jim Davis), GARFIELD MINUS GARFIELD takes everyone’s favorite fat cat out of the picture, leaving us with only the lonely ennui of Jon as he’s left to voice thoughts about his own existence into an empty void. Now you can enjoy the best of both Garfield worlds! The full-color book is arranged so fans can compare the original Garfield strip with the “Garfield Minus Garfield” version. Published simultaneously with the special hardcover anniversary book, Garfield: 30 Years of Laughs & Lasagna, GARFIELD MINUS GARFIELD is the perfect reminder of how Garfield is still a major pop culture icon—even when he’s not in the picture. About the Authors:
Dan Walsh is a 33-year-old musician, artist, nerd, and businessman from Dublin, Ireland. He attended Sandymount High School and then went on to study art. He regularly sold his paintings at St. Stephen’s Green Park, where he could be found drinking coffee, playing guitar, and writing. His foray into writing comics started when he was ten years old. He would draw his own comic books with several endings so that the reader could decide how each story concluded. A long career as a musician and an eventual move into business as an Information Technology project manager spurred Dan into revisiting his childhood passion for comics, and garfieldminusgarfield.net was born. He now lives in Dublin city center with his fiancee, Yvonne, and two dwarf hamsters, Punchy and Fat-head. Jim Davis was born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana, and was promptly dropped on his head—which could explain his lifelong desire to be a cartoonist. He later attended Ball State University in Muncie, where he distinguished himself by earning one of the lowest cumulative grade-point averages in the history of the university. (Incidentally, a fellow classmate named David Letterman earned the other.) The Garfield strip was born on June 19, 1978, syndicated in 41 U.S. newspapers. Today it’s recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip, appearing in 2,400 newspapers and read by some 230 million readers in 111 countries around the globe. About Paws, Inc. : Paws, Incorporated was founded in 1981 by cartoonist Jim Davis as a creative house to support Garfield licensing. Today, the company, located in rural Indiana, handles not only the creative angle, but also the business concerns of the corpulent kitty worldwide. Paws boasts a staff of more than 50 artists, writers, and licensing professionals. Paws, Inc. is a privately held company and the sole owner of the copyrights and trademarks for GARFIELD and GARFIELD Characters.
